Details
A Politician’s Ladder, or Wrong by Wrong to Success
by George Downing
After a pandemic sized shutdown, and challenging reboot, The Silver Plume Melodrama is returning to the George Downing Playhouse. This year we reprise A politician’s Ladder, or Wrong by Wrong to Success, forty years after the original 1985 production. This is a celebration of the largest community-based, volunteer fundraising initiative for the preservation of Silver Plume’s historical structures. Over 500 volunteer hours are donated by the community to make this production come to life. We are excited to have a Clear Creek County based cast and crew, directed by Silver Plume local, and George Downing’s protégé, Nicholas Regester. Please join us for this dinner theater and support the preservation of this unique historic community.
“It is the turn of the century in a town nestled in the foothills from whence its livelihood has come. It is not a boomtown but instead grew at a measured pace because of natural geographic factors.
Situated at the confluence of two valleys, it was the natural location for stores and services to both, and the streams from each tumbled together creating a sizeable river of spectacular beauty. Far enough from the mining and logging in one direction and the dusty trail herds in the other to avoid the dirt and grime, yet close enough to gain sustenance from all.
Though the mutterings about the shaky economics of precious metals have reached the town, most people believe the diversity of the area will pull them through. Only a few are taking steps to find-untapped resources that will guarantee a bountiful future.
These very steps create our drama. The subtle forces that guide municipal growth are not walking in unison.”
When: Saturdays 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. and Sundays 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M., April 26th – 27th May 3rd – 4th, with and encore performance July 3rd
How: Tickets $50, Kids $35 (12 and under), Seniors $40 (Sunday Only). Ticket includes dinner and ice cream sundae bar.

---
Did you know? The Burro is the Colorado State Animal and that Pack Burro Racing is the only sport indigenous to the State of Colorado? It has its roots in the State’s mining heritage. In the early days of the mining industry, miners would take burros, which is the Spanish word for donkey, through the mountains of Colorado in their search for gold. Because the burros were carrying supplies, the miners could not ride the animal and so they would walk, leading the donkey. The burro races commemorate these men and their burros.
Format: In a typical burro race, a runner and a burro race complete a prescribed course together, with the runner leading the burro on a rope. Riding the burro is not allowed. In fact, the human may carry the burro, but the burro may not carry the human. The burro must be on a lead rope, which is limited to 15 feet. Runners must maintain control of their animals at all times. Burros must also carry a pack saddle with 33 pounds of traditional mining gear, including a pick, gold pan, and a shovel. Runners may also include other gear in their saddles, such as windbreakers, water, food, etc, but the surplus gear cannot be counted in the 33 pounds. Cruelty to the burro is prohibited and racing officials have the right to hold any burro for 30 minutes following the race for an inspection by a veterinarian.
Lore: There are two legends concerning the beginning of these burro races. The first states that the races began when two miners found gold and had to race back to the claims office. Because they could not ride the burros the miners were forced to run, leading the burros. The second legend is somewhat vague but concerns a few drunken miners at a bar in Leadville, Colorado.

About the headliner
Nick Hoff is a nationally touring stand-up comedian who has been on MTV, co-hosts a weekly show on SiriusXM, and was a featured act in Netflix’s Comedy Festival. His debut album “Baby Daddy” hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts, and his new hour-long special “Front to Back” can be streamed on YouTube. When he’s not on stage, Nick can often be seen in commercials for Miller Lite, Pepsi and Amazon.
Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy hand-picked Nick to open for them on their critically acclaimed “We’ve Been Thinking” Tour. He has headlined the “Pink Ribbon Comedy Tour” which made stops in 40 cities doing 65 shows all raising money for breast cancer research. He was also part of the “Walk of Shame” national comedy tour, which was not quite so noble a cause.
Check out Nick live when he comes to a city near you, and listen to his weekly podcast “Hoffcast” where he trades stories with comedians, friends, and one astronaut (so far).

September 6, 2025 - Devil of the Divide Ultra 50k/50m
We are pleased to present one of the most beautiful and challenging trail races in the state of Colorado with breathtaking (literally and figuratively) views of Clear Creek County and the Continental Divide. Participants will reach a top altitude over 13,000 feet with over 6,500 feet of climbing for the 50K course and 3,400 feet of elevation gain for the 22K. 100% of the point-to-point courses are dirt, with the majority of each course being single track trail.
Due to the difficulty and remoteness of this race, prior ultra running experience is REQUIRED for 50K participants and trail running experience at high altitude is highly recommended for 22K participants. These courses are absolutely stunning and equally challenging.
